Non-invasive measurement method for partial oxygen pressure via the surface of the skin & indirect measurement of the systemic arterial oxygen pressure was originally developed for blood gas analysis monitoring in the intensive care / neonatology field.
Luminescence lifetime measurement is the emission of light by a substance as a reaction after an activation.
Fluorescence lifetime measurement is a form of photoluminescence as a result of singlet–singlet electronic relaxation (typical lifetime: nanoseconds).
Medicap optical probe consists of: fluorescent matrix (layer), LED lamp & heating unit. Skin/tissue is heated – so the oxygen diffuses into the matrix = O2 marker molecule sensitive.
In the matrix the „green“ LED light is absorbed from the oxygen molecules and „red“ light is emitted / given back. Dependent on the oxygen concentration, fluorescence lifetime is measured in the matrix a.k.a. quenching.
